They do still have world's fairs!
Many North Americans are surprised to discover that world's fairs still exist. Since the last world's fair in North America, Expo 86 in Vancouver, there have been seven such events, although in the rest of the world, they're called "international expositions," or just "expos."
Expo 2008 is to be held in the city of Zaragoza, Spain with the theme of water and sustainable development.
There are a few grassroots efforts in the United States and Canada to once again host a world's fair in the United States in 2017 or 2020.
